ヴァージニア・リー・バートンはフォリーコーブ・デザイナーズを指導しながら、専門の美術教育を受けていない人にどのようにデザインを教えるかという方法論と、デザインは誰にでも出来る日常の自己表現である、という彼女の信念を詰め込んだ本『DESIGN AND HOW!!!』をホートン・ミフリン社の依頼により出版することを1940年の初めに決め、1949年には契約を結んでいます。
絵本の仕事、フォリーコーブ・デザイナーズの仕事は多忙を極め、編集者からの度重なる励ましと催促を受けながら、完璧主義のバートンは完成に向けて、絵本の仕事も並行に進めながら熱心に草稿を重ねていました。
残念ながら未完に終わりますが、良いデザインには流行がないこと、デザインに近道はなく線の引き方、配置、白と黒のバランス、濃淡や比率などの基礎の練習が大切なこと、また、デザインは自分自身の知識や興味から直接探さないといけない、という理念を伝える丁寧なテキストブックとなっています。彼女は最も美しいデザインは1:2:4という比率でなりたっていると考え、繰り返し、比率によるデザインを試みました。「Fish Story」や「Swing Tree」は小魚やりんごの樹が2倍、4倍になって全体が構成されています。

Virginia Lee Burton, while leading Folly Cove Designers, decided to publish “DESIGN AND HOW!!!” which contained methods to teach design to those without professional art education in addition to her belief that design is nothing but daily self expression everyone can engage in the early 1940’s. She signed a contract with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers in 1949.
She was so busy with picture books and Folly Cove Designers during these years. Since she was a perfectionist, she repeatedly refining the draft of the book while working on her picture books in parallel with encouragement and reminder from the editor.
Unfortunately the book was unpublished but it served as a good design textbook communicating that good design is beyond vogue, that there is not shortcut in learning design and that basic practice is important including how to draw a line, to arrange elements and to balance black and white as well as shades and ratios. She also taught us that design should be explored based on our knowledge and interests. She believed that the most beautiful design has a ratio of 1:2:4 and frequently tried ratio-based designs. You can find the ratio in “Fish Story” and “Swing Tree” where little fish and apple trees are constructed in double and in quadruple, presenting marvelous harmony.
