まだ彼らの知名度があまり高くはなかった1949年、チャールズとレイ･イームズはイームズハウスを設計、建設しました。それは彼ら夫婦の生活の場であり仕事場となるものでした。
彼らのプロジェクト一つ一つに見られるように、イームズ夫妻は『アーツ&アーキテクチャ』誌の革新的なケース･スタディ･ハウスのプログラムに基づいて家を設計することの意味を探求しました。建築界に対する挑戦ともいえるこのプロジェクトは、戦時中に開発された安価で短期間に家を建設するための新素材や生産プロセスを活用することを奨励しながら、同時に現代世界における人々の暮らしを反映することを目的としていました。イームズ夫妻の答えは、それまでは産業用の建物に使われていた、当時革命的でもあった、カタログ注文できる大量生産の部材を使うことでした。
この家は敷地の特性と住む人のニーズに対するイームズ夫妻の深い探求の成果であり、光の研究と想定した生活行動を描くことから生まれたものです。二人は二層の大きな部屋を複数持つフレキシブルな空間をつくり、そこでは茶会、映画撮影、作品の写真撮影やその他様々な活動を受け入れることができました。山腹に横たわり、木々が周囲を囲み、草地に面した彼らの自邸は自然と一体化し、自然が「緩衝材」の役割を果たしています。
チャールズとレイの自邸はイームズ夫妻の作品全体に横たわるテーマの多くを実証しています：訪れる人と迎える人の関係性、生活上のニーズの充足、経験の重要性、素材の特性を活かした使い方、自然との関係性、反復のプロセス、等々です。
2019年12月24日にイームズハウスが70周年を迎えるにあたり（チャールズとレイが新居に移り住んだ日から）、私たちは250年プロジェクトの中で新たな段階に向けて準備をしています。我々の計画ではみなさんのひ孫のまたそのひ孫がイームズハウスを訪れても、今の皆さんと同じように本物の体験ができるようにすることです。
ゲティ保存修復研究所が新しく発表したイームズハウス保全管理計画を手引きとして、我々は現在マスタープランを作成中です。 何年間もの研究によって、構造、ランドスケープ、室内の備品、無形の資産など敷地全体としての調査になることがわかりました。チャールズとレイの家の精神を生かし続けるには、これらについて本質的な意義がとても重要になります。
我々のアプローチはチャールズとレイの書き留めた言葉に影響を受けています、特に：
「我々は問題を再検討することも含めて、調査内容に従う心構えをするべきだ･･･当たり前の問題への疑問を新鮮で明快に言い換えることができるように、あらゆる領域の問題を一つに集め、すべての疑問を関係づける必要がある」
次の段階の作業の準備をするにあたり、チャールズとレイが我々の行く道を導き続けてくれるでしょう。
In 1949, before they were well-known, Charles and Ray Eames designed and built the Eames House. It was to be their home, a place where the couple could live a life in work.
With the same focus that they applied to each of their projects, the Eameses explored what it meant to design a house under Arts & Architecture magazine’s innovative Case Study House Program. This challenge to the architectural community encouraged the use of new materials and processes developed during the war years to build homes inexpensively and quickly, while expressing man’s life in the modern world. The Eameses’ response: to utilize mass-produced, catalogue-ordered components that were previously used for industrial buildings, revolutionary at the time.
The house is the product of the Eameses’ deep explorations of the site and their needs, from studies of light to sketches of intended activities. They created flexibility with two-story high great rooms, which accommodated tea ceremonies, filming, product shots, and more. Nestled into a hillside, bordered by trees and facing a meadow, their home was integrated with nature, serving as a “shock absorber”.
Charles and Ray’s home exemplifies many of the themes seen across all the Eameses’ work: the guest/host relationship, meeting the need, the importance of primary experiences, the honest use of materials, the relation with nature, the iterative process, and more.
With the Eames House’s 70th anniversary coming up on December 24, 2019 (honoring the date when Charles and Ray moved into their new home), we are preparing for the next phase of work under our 250 Year Project. Our plan is to ensure that your great, great, great, great grandchildren may visit the Eames House, and have the same authentic experience you may have today.
We are creating a Master Plan, guided by the Getty Conservation Institute’s newly published Eames House Conservation Management Plan. Informed by years of studies, it is a holistic examination of the site—structures, landscape, contents, and intangibles, those critical significances that are so important to protect in order to keep the spirit of Charles and Ray’s home alive.
Our approach is inspired by Charles and Ray’s writings, notably:
“One should be prepared to follow an investigation with a restudy of the problem… it will be necessary to bring together and to bring to bear on the questions all the disciplines which can restate the questions of familiar problems in a fresh clear way.”
As we prepare for our next phase of work, Charles and Ray will continue to guide our way.
